SMURBS is a new project, launched on September 2017, under the ERA-NET-Cofund Grant agreement No: 689443. SMURBS will support the achievement of the goals and objectives of Strand-1 of ERA-PLANET, "Smart Cities & Resilient Societies", H2020-SC5-15-2015 - Strengthening the European Research Area in the domain of Earth Observation. Its Consortium is comprised of 19 partners from 12 European countries, including research institutes, space agencies and universities, all Earth Observation experts (in situ, satellite, modeling, smart sensors, Citizen Observatories) in several thematic areas.
SMURBS aspires to increase urban resilience targeting challenges with respect to air quality, urban growth, natural/manmade disasters and relevant impacts on health or more vulnerable populations. The way forward is to integrate empowering "smart city" methods with cutting-edge Earth Observation expertise to produce new data, information, tools and services, tailored to the needs of the citizens, authorities and policy makers, enabling informed decision making.
Key steps consist of: (i) mapping what is out there and understand what the user want, (ii) design, implement and create synergies among EO platforms to cover these needs (iii) create a portfolio of Smart Urban Solutions with SMURBS' products, services and tools (iv) deploy our solutions in pilot cities (v) replicate in a dynamic network of follower cities.
This 1st Newsletter highlights our main activities over the past 5 months. We encourage you to follow SMURBS and we remain open to collaboration opportunities that may arise during its 36-month duration.
