Unfold the full range of technologically available methods for the next generation of urban monitoring capacities, pollutants of emerging importance and high resolution city-scale modeling, adjusted to modern needs of AQ management
Address natural and anthropogenic disaster affecting cities or peri‐urban neighborhoods, covering all phases of the disaster management cycle, i.e. preparedness and planning, early warning, emergency response and post-assessment
Exploit the capacity of the Copernicus satellites to identify and define urban development EVs and indicators (incl. SDG relevant) to address trends in urban growth, urban density and sprawl, to develop novel city management methods
Identify patterns and processes in support of decision makers to prepare for, withstand and respond faster to the increasing migration process
Exploit EO to address health related monitoring needs, in order to facilitate the potential weighing of mitigation options, taking additionally into account several socioeconomic factors
Tackle with multiple aspects of social inequalities in human exposure to environmental pressures, with emphasis on vulnerable population groups

THE CHALLENGE
Urbanization is a high priority in the UN 2030 Agenda for SGDs (G11) and GEO’s Societal Benefit Area
for Sustainable Urban Resilience.
THE CALL
H2020/ERA-PLANET in connection with GEOSS and Copernicus, envisaged the integration of
Smart City methods and EO for building resilient societies.
THE SOLUTION
SMURBS sets the stage for integration of the still fragmented EO, into information and decision
making tools for individuals and local governments.
